SUCCESS BY 6 HELPING TO BREAK RECORD
NUMBER OF BOOKS READ TO CHILDREN

Lakeland, FL – Dr. Daniel Haight, Director of the Polk County Health Department and Susan Black, Marketing Director for United Way of Central Florida will be guest readers for the Jumpstart Read for the Record for pre-schoolers at Educare child care center.

Coordinated locally by United Way Success By 6, over 1000 children in 30 childcare centers will be visited by guest readers in an attempt to break the national record for the most children reading the same book on the same day.  The book, The Story of Ferdinand, is a classic 1936 story about a bull who didn’t want to fight and all the funny things that happen to him.  Last year, 150,000 children participated nationwide.  After the book is read, there are planned activities and book discussions planned to connect the youngsters with an early learning experience that helps promote early literacy.

The mission of Success By 6 is to help all children enter school ready to succeed.  Currently, almost half the children entering kindergarten in Polk County fail language proficiency screening meaning they are not ready to start learning kindergarten level class work.  For more information on Success By 6 and this project, contact Lee Shupsky at United Way 863/648.1500 x 248.
