Chef Chad Houser created Café Momentum, a restaurant and training platform to provide post-release paid internships to at-risk youth who have spent time in juvenile facilities. The program helps equip employees with job and life skills mentoring, including leadership, social, vocational, financial, parenting and anger management skills. Café Momentum was created through GroundFloor, a social incubator housed by United Way of Metropolitan Dallas.

This year’s Co-Chairs of the campaign, Wesley and Ashley Barnett, announced that the United Way of Central Florida’s goal for the 2016 campaign would surpass the 2015 total, and would be the largest campaign ever for the organization.

Students who drop out of school are more likely to be unemployed, uninsured, divorced and incarcerated. We can’t let that happen. Polk County Public Schools and United Way of Central Florida want every child to be given the best possible chance for success in school and in life.

United Ways and school districts partnered in 12 communities across the country to dramatically reduce school drop out rates with a program called Early Warning and Response System (EWRS). The United Way Worldwide invited sixteen United Ways to join the effort to improve the "ABC's" - Attendance, Behavior and Course grades - of struggling middle school students.

The Learning Resource Center of Polk County, Inc. (LRC) offers kindergartners a summer opportunity to prepare for academic success with Camp READY!

LRC’s Camp READY! funded by United Way, is designed to build pre-reading and kindergarten-readiness skills through experiential learning centers that include art, music and movement, cooking, and reading-readiness. On average, students who attended the full four-week program have demonstrated learning gains of seven months in vocabulary development.

The Judd Jog is an annual 5k event, sponsored by the Polk County Sheriff's Charities. It will begin at 8 a.m. with registration starting at 7 a.m. The cost is $25 for adults and $20 for 17 years old and younger, if registering by April 13, 2016. After April 13, the cost is $30 for all ages. All proceeds will benefit the United Way of Central Florida.
