Kicking off the new year on an amazing note, Publix Super Markets, Inc. associates and Publix Super Markets Charities have broken all previous giving records by pledging over $4.5 million to
United Way of Central Florida’s 2015 annual community campaign, an increase of over $450,000 from the previous year.
“Our associates are passionate about giving back to their communities,” said Greta Dupuy, manager of associate services at Publix and Board Member of United Way of Central Florida. “They volunteer countless hours serving in their communities and their generosity to the United Way of Central Florida truly exemplifies the spirit of giving established by our founder George Jenkins.”
The United Way of Central Florida kicked off its annual campaign last August with a goal of raising $9 million. This is an increase from the 2014 campaign that raised more than $8.8 million.
"We set a lofty goal for our 2015 campaign. Luckily, Publix and Publix Charities continue to set the example of giving back to both our community and throughout the Southeast. We are incredibly
fortunate to have local Publix associates set the pace for giving year after year,” said Kimberly Elmhorst, the 2015 United Way of Central Florida campaign chair. "Be a #GAMECHANGER is United Way of Central Florida’s 2015 community
campaign theme and Publix associates continue to show us all how to be game changers for the many in our community who are benefiting from their generosity."
Publix associates and Publix Charities not only support the United Way of Central Florida in Polk, Hardee and Highland counties, but also throughout their footprint in six states. The over 179,000 associates from the 1,111 Publix stores and numerous manufacturing facilities, distribution centers and offices increased their giving by over seven percent from the previous year’s contributions for a total of $33.4 million. Publix Charities has also continued their generosity and support of United Way by pledging more than $25.3 million. Combined, Publix associates and Publix Charities will contribute over $58.7 million to United Ways throughout the Southeast this year. The success of this campaign makes them the third largest United Way campaign giver in the United States.
“It is amazing the impact Publix is making throughout the Southeast,” stated Stacey D. Stewart, U.S. president of United Way Worldwide. “Their contributions and commitment to improving local communities started with George Jenkins and continues today through Publix’s leadership and associates and the generosity of the foundation. As a network, United Way is so thankful to be partnered with Publix and Publix Charities as we address the critical issues with our local communities.”
Publix Super Markets, Inc. is only the third company to have a nationwide campaign larger than $50 million. United Parcel Service Inc. and Wells Fargo, both national companies, are the only two organizations that contribute more each year to United Way.
The long-standing relationship between Publix and United Way began in 1981 and since 1993 Publix associates and Publix Charities have donated more than $675 million to local United Ways throughout the Publix market region.
“We are all so blessed and thankful to have the support of Publix, their associates and Publix Charities. Their continued support and this huge increase in giving really shows their amazing level of commitment to helping their friends and neighbors in need.” said Alan H. Turner II, President and CEO of United Way of Central Florida. “These funds will help us build on current partnerships and continue to find ways to improve lives in our community. Publix and Publix Charities once again are leading the way both here and across the Southeast.”
