United Way of Central Florida
In a recent study done by the Food Research and Action Center, a national anti-hunger nonprofit in Washington D.C., the Lakeland-Winter Haven metropolitan area has a food hardship rate of 23.2 percent, the second highest in the country behind Bakersfield, California.
This is just one of many studies that show food hardship and food insecurity is an issue in Central Florida.
The United Way of Central Florida wants to help by:
1) Bring attention to the food hardships facing so many here in Central Florida.
2) Address the short-term need of collecting non-perishable food
3) Address the long-term need of helping families be financially stable
UWCF is hosting a contest to see which participating organization in Polk, Hardee or Highlands County can collect much needed food for our local food banks and pantries, as well as build the most creative and visually captivating sculpture out of donated non-perishable food. BUILD UNITED!
It's a food drive with a kick.
From August 30th to mid-October, companies, groups and/or schools to register a team that will then be asked to collect non-perishable foods. Then the fun begins! Build something, anything – but keep it tasteful and family friendly. It could be a building, a truck , a replica of the Eiffel Tower, anything you can think of to build. Remember, keep collecting food. Not all food collected has to be used. The most food collected the better.
Pictures of the completed project will then be sent to UWCF and posted on UWCF’s Facebook page.
From October 21-31 we will ask viewers to vote with “Likes” for their favorite Build United project.
From November 1-3 local celebrity judges will visit select locations to view complete projects for addition awards.
Between November 3 – 17 all projects need to be dismantled and all the food collected needs to be delivered to a local food bank or pantry. So remember the labels need to be left on and the food has to be able to be used.
Ten Awards will be given out for:
Most Creative Display
Most Creative Use of Labels
Most Food Collected (All food counted for this award does not need to be part of display. This is
for overall food collected by team.)
Top 3 – Facebook Likes on UWCF’s Facebook Page
Top 3 – Judges Choice (Overall)
Not only will this help with the immediate need for food, but this will help us have a positive impact on the long-term situation for several families receiving assistance.
We are proud and very grateful for the partnership with Publix Super Markets Charities.
Publix Super Markets Charities will donate
$1 for every can collected, up to $50,000.
These funds will be invested in Financial Education classes at a few of the organizations where families will be picking up food. These classes can make the difference of whether a family or individual needs to return to a food pantry or not.
Please join us and have some fun while addressing a very serious issue facing so many in Central Florida!
Deadline to register your team is September 30th.
