A Winter Haven couple has donated $3,000 to a children’s literacy project supported by the United Way of Central Florida. The check will fund the Dolly Parton Imagination Library – a program that mails age-appropriate books to children each month. The $3,000 donation, courtesy of Nat and Jane West, will provide free books for 100 Winter Haven area children every month, for one year.

“We believe strongly in the benefits of early literacy and the importance of quality time spent between children and their families,” said Mr. West. “I hope that this donation will encourage other individuals and organizations to also offer financial support for this excellent initiative.”

The goal of the literacy project is to help families build a home library of reading materials so that children have access to learning resources that will prepare them to succeed in school. Dolly Parton Libraries are a component of “Let’s Grow. Every child. Every chance.” – a community initiative working to increase early literacy. Winter Haven now joins Bartow, Fort Meade, Lake Wales and Lakeland’s Crystal Lake area (zip code 33801) as areas currently participating in the program.
