Astronaut Story Musgrave to Speak at United Way Campaign Launch

Highland City, FL –The United Way of Central Florida is excited to welcome NASA Hall of Fame astronaut Dr. Story Musgrave as a guest speaker on Wednesday, September 21, 2011. He will be spending the day at several invitation-only events in Bartow, Lakeland and Winter Haven to help raise awareness and funding for the United Way’s annual campaign.

Dr. Musgrave is the only NASA astronaut to have flown missions on all five shuttles, and is the second-oldest person behind John Glenn to orbit the earth. He retired from NASA in 1997. Dr. Musgrave serves as a strong advocate for the power of education. He holds six degrees -- a doctorate of medicine, as well as two bachelor’s degrees and three master’s degrees in subjects ranging from mathematics to business administration to literature.

Dr. Musgrave will be the keynote speaker at a breakfast to be held at the Peace River Country Club in Bartow. He is also scheduled to take the stage at a luncheon to be held at the Florida Air Museum in Lakeland.

The day will include visits to the Central Florida Aerospace Academy and Polk State College where Dr. Musgrave will address the student body on his experiences in space, and share with them his life experiences in business and science. That evening, he will speak at a reception hosted by Polk State College in Winter Haven.

“We are honored to have an American hero like Story Musgrave come help us launch our annual campaign,” said Terry Worthington, President of the United Way of Central Florida. “These events will provide an opportunity for our supporters to hear his inspirational life experiences both on earth and in space.”
