Words can change a 5 year-old's life! United Way organized the Early Education Partners of Polk, a coalition of early educators that work with teachers to help low-income children enter kindergarten ready to read. This group of experienced educators created Word Play, a curriculum designed to improve the vocabulary of preschool children. Even paraprofessionals new to the classrooom can use these activities to teach young children the vocabulary skills they need to learn to read. 80% of low-income children fail language assessments; 80% of middle/high income children pass them. United Way addresses the root cause of school failure as it works to eliminate the gap between low income and middle/high income students.
