Sleep periods develop as the brain matures. Day or night, the best times to soothe a child to sleep are during times of drowsiness. Babies usually begin to sleep for longer stretches at night at about six weeks. Darkness and quiet adult behaviors serve as cues to sleep. Infants usually begin to sleep for longer periods during the day between three and four months. For naps, set aside quiet time and reduce outside stimulation.
