Starting school can be very stressful for preschool and Kindergarten students. The change can
be emotionally overwhelming, but if you prepare your child ahead of time, meltdowns can be
minimized. Here are a five tips to prepare your child for this new adventure:
In the week leading up to the start of school, take the calendar down and show your child
when the first day of school is. If siblings start on a different day it is important that
she understands this difference to avoid disappointment.
You will also need to explain if she will be finishing earlier/later than her siblings.
Tired children can become easily overwhelmed. Make sure that in the last week before
school, major activities are kept to a minimum and that she is in bed early each night.
Keep calm and low key as the first day approaches. Minimum fuss. The more “normal” we can
make the day, the easier it will be for her.
On the morning of the first day, make sure that she doesn’t see you cry! There may be a
fair chance that your emotions will go everywhere. If you make a scene it is very likely
that it will unsettle her.
Have a smooth and happy start to the school year!
